Operations

Turning, boring, facing, grooving, threading and ultra-precision diamond turning

The range

Five groups of diamond turning tools, listed from the most widely used to the most specialised.

01

PCD inserts

Sintered polycrystalline diamond tip on a carbide substrate. Fine, medium and coarse grain grades of roughly 2, 10 and 25 µm.

Best for: aluminium alloys, copper, MMC, CFRP

02

CVD diamond-coated carbide

A 5 to 30 µm diamond coating on WC-Co inserts. Suits complex geometries and chip breakers that PCD cannot offer.

Best for: graphite, CFRP, green ceramics

03

CVD thick film (TFD)

Binder-free diamond sheet of about 0.3 to 1.0 mm, laser cut and brazed to carbide. Very sharp edge and long life in abrasive material.

Best for: aluminium above 12% Si, MMC, CFRP

04

Single-crystal diamond

Natural, HPHT or CVD crystal tools with an edge radius of about 10 to 50 nm, for ultra-precision diamond turning.

Best for: optical mirrors, infrared optics, NiP moulds

05

NPD and special tools

Binder-free nanopolycrystalline diamond, plus PCD grooving, threading, boring and form tools, and diamond burnishing tools.

Best for: piston grooves, bores, profile parts

Diamond is not for steel

Above about 700 °C diamond reacts with iron, nickel and cobalt, so it wears quickly on steel, cast iron and nickel alloys. For those materials use PCBN, carbide or ceramic inserts. If an enquiry is better served by another tool, we will say so.

How ordering works

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum order?

[MINIMUM ORDER QUANTITY OR VALUE]. Single-insert trial orders: [CONFIRM].

Can diamond inserts cut steel or cast iron?

No. Diamond is for non-ferrous metals, composites, graphite and similar materials. Use PCBN, carbide or ceramic for ferrous work.

How do I choose between PCD and CVD-coated inserts?

PCD lasts longer and holds a sharper edge. CVD-coated inserts cost less and can have complex chip-breaker geometry. Send your application and we will recommend one.

Can you supply custom geometries?

[CONFIRM WITH YOUR MANUFACTURER: custom tip shapes, edge preparation, minimum quantities and lead time.]

What are your lead times?

Stock items: [X] working days. Made to order: [X] weeks. Exact times are stated on every quotation.

Do you ship internationally?

[LIST COUNTRIES SERVED]. Incoterms, documents and payment terms are on the ordering and logistics page.
